Minke, The Right man for the job??
Upon reading Chapter 15, I questioned Dr. Martinet's assumption that Minke would be beneficial as an emotional guide to Annelies. Althoug Minke did have copious amounts of information regarding Annelies and the cause of her emotional issues and shy nature, Minke is simply a young student with a full plate of his own. The prospect of having to fight Robert Suurhof is enough for a young man his age to worry about. Although Minke has proven himself quite helpful to his friend Jan, both financially and mentally, this bond between Minke and Jan is completely different than Minke and Annelies relationship. Furthermore, Minke might be doing more damage in my opinion by being with Annelies. From personal experience and from knowledge of friend's experiences, getting involved with someone emotionally distressed like Annelies at such a young age would only cause more issues in the long run for both parties. I then began to think that Annelies' care should be entrusted to Dr. Martinet, who is a professional. However Dr. Martinet did mention that he was so enchanted by Annelies beauty that he would want her for his own. This leads me to believe that perhaps Dr. Martinet along with Robert Mellema have had intercourse with Annelies. Dr. Martinet even questions Minke as to which men have slept with her, perhaps as a clue to his possible relations with Annelies. In closing, Annelies does have emotional problems stemming from her past, however is Minke or Dr. Martinet suited to take on this task?
