It is apparent that “The Earth of Mankind” written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer is a love story. Minke feels Annelies is a very beautiful however he does not seem to have a deep connection with her. While reading I noticed the mother of Annelies (Nyai) is setting up two young persons. For example in the earlier chapters of the novel Nayi wanted Minke to kiss her daughter in front of her. Nayi is always trying to facilitate Minke in ways to create his romantic relationship with Annelies. It is evident in the reading that Nayi was never able to develop any normal relationships with men after her father sold her. One can only conclude that due to her lack in a “normal” love life (which most often leads to a marriage and family) she wants her daughter to have a proper marriage. She explains to Annelies how important it is to be independent but to also be a lady, with a husband. Minke is always wanted by Annelies; she is relentless in her attempts to make him stay around. For example she cries whenever she doesn’t get her way with Minke. This tactic she uses works at first but after a while Minke stops letting her crying persuade him in staying.
Nayi has an agenda for the two young persons (Minke, and Annlies) and it’s to have them fall in love. I personal fell that this is Nayi was of vicariously living through her daughters love life; the love like Nayi lacked.
