Has Tante Atie character changed toward the end of the story?

Throughout most decisions the focus has been on Sophie and her mother. However I am concerned about Tante Atie. In the later chapters before Sophie returns back to the states, many of her descriptions of Tante Atie experiences are very vague. It has been a long time since they have seen each other, and it is normal for their relationship to have changed. Tante Atie seems distant from her family. Sophie’s grandmother describes Tante Atie as being displaced. She (grandmother) expresses how she doesn’t seem to know where Tante Atie ever is located, and she “changes her moods like the colors in the sky. Tante Atie and her dear friend Lousia share a special relationship, and she seems to be Tate Atie main focus in the later chapters. However I wonder if there is an issue going on with Tante Atie that the reader will never know about.

  1. I think it is very sad that the relationship between Tante Atie and Sophie cahnged. Tante Atie raised Sophie in the very crucial years of her life. She should be a huge part of it forever. I wonder if in the begining of the novel when Tante Atie disappears at "work" all day is significant. Maybe she has a secret life that her faimily would disown her for. Or, maybe she is upset and wants to keep her distance from her family because she feels that she raised Sophie for twelve years and now she has lost her. Maybe losing Sophie had a greater effect on her than displayed in the book. I think this topic is a very interesting one to bring up, because Tante Atie is the main person in Sophie's life and I think a huge reason why Sophie has more hope to make a change in their family traditions and ways of thinking.
